I am a teenager at night in my room. I put on the headphones and a record on the turntable. When I turn the lights out I can only see the red glow coming from the turntable’s light. I listen to Pink Floyd, but it is a particular passage that puts me in a different place: the sound of the opening bars of “Sheep” off the album “Animals”. I feel far away, alone, sad but safe in the flat and endlessly green countryside near Grandma’s house, where I would fly kites as a young boy. In late 2017, undergoing many cancer treatments in a hospital in Cologne, I remember this music, played by the late Richard Wright on a Fender Rhodes electric piano. This is where my story of “More Pink Floyd” starts and ends, at a point in my life where thoughts about dying and my teenage memories of Pink Floyd entangle like the 2 strings in a DNA. In the following months I sit down with a grand and electric piano, organ, ukulele, guitar, synthesizer or code editor and make this album. “More Pink Floyd” becomes a soft psychedelic solo instrumental record with more Pink Floyd-ian harmonies, more 1960s experimentation and, wait there is more, a 1970s comfortably numb, but melancholic, haze over a faraway island. It is a concept album, perhaps a soundtrack, with connections to the past: 2 tracks are named after the 2 members of Pink Floyd that have passed. My own psyche deteriorates and falls apart in 2018, and so does this album sink into the netherworld of the disjointed mind until it is welcomed to the “machine” of the UNI-Center, only to be spit out on the other end next to a cow in Syd Barrett's flat in London, England. “More Pink Floyd” signifies this text with bookends, perhaps tiny doses of humor and it does all via lucid remembering of these words of Roger Water’s wisdom: “You have to be trusted by the people that you lie to, so when they turn their back on you, you’ll get a chance to put the knife in”. |
